RoHS, WEEE, China RoHS, ELV...

Manufacturers are increasingly becoming subject to governmental regulations, which restrict the use of certain materials in products or require take-back and recycling.

The three of the most comprehensive regulations were adopted by the European Union (EU) in 2000 and 2003: ELV (End of Life Vehicle Directive), RoHS (Restrictions on the use of Certain Hazardous Substances), WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment).

It is estimated that by 2010, more than 75% of all electronic products will be sold in countries with legislations similar to RoHS and WEEE.

Similar environmental regulations are being introduced in China (China RoHS and China WEEE), Taiwan, Korea and Japan, as well as the United States and other parts of the world.

It is estimated that by 2010, more than 75% of all electronic products will be sold in countries with legislations similar to RoHS and WEEE.

The increasing complexity and number of regulations has reached the point where a comprehensive compliance solution is mandatory.

RoHS

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive adopted by the European Union in 2003 limits the use of six substances in Electrical and Electronic products.

China RoHS

China RoHS not only puts tighter requirements on the types of product classes required to comply compared to its EU counterpart, but it has other elements that are much more stringent than the original EU RoHS Directive.

WEEE

The EU's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) is meant to prevent waste of EEE from being introduced into the waste streams. WEEE requirements vary state-by-state, which imposes a big challenge for manufacturers trying to comply with the directive.

ELV

The End of Life Vehicle Directive (ELV) 2000/53/EC adopted by the European Union (EU) in 2000 aims to reduce the waste in automobile vehicles and encourage more recycling.

REACH

Manufacturers need to understand and prepare for the European Union's new chemicals policy, REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals), because it will impact their products and their profitability.
