ELV Directive

The End of Life Vehicle Directive (ELV) 2000/53/EC adopted by the European Union (EU) in 2000 was enacted to encourage automobile manufacturers to design new vehicles considering their end-of-life impact in order to reduce the waste in vehicles and encourage more recycling.

ELV overview

The main purpose of the ELV Directive is to ensure that automotive producers limit the use of certain hazardous substances in vehicles and components and promote recyclability.

The ELV Directive affects automotive manufacturers of three and four wheel vehicles as well as importers, direct suppliers, sub-contractors and contract Electronic and Electrical manufacturers in the European Union member states.

Failure to comply with this directive will prohibit a car manufacturer from selling vehicles in EU markets. Several Asian countries have implemented similar legislation and others are considering legislation.

IMDS - International Material Data System

To assure compliance against these new regulatory requirements, the automotive industry has identified systems and processes to track the material and substance composition of all vehicle components.

The International Material Data System™ (IMDS) is a web-based centralized repository of material content information that was developed through a joint effort among various car manufacturers.
