Designing and optimizing the ECN workflow process
General Instrument, an industry leader in semiconductors and cable television equipment, was acquired by Motorola in 2000.
The engineering change process was primarily paper driven. ECNs were processed by the specifications group. The tracking process had become a "black hole." The average processing time had increased to 6-8 weeks and management had no visibility into the process.
Synapsis worked with the business to define and optimize a standard ECN workflow process. This workflow was automated in their PLM system and included conditional routing that streamlined and formalized the existing manual routing and approval process
The automatic ECN workflow enabled managers to see where the bottlenecks were and take steps to clear them. It enabled clear metrics to be established and monitored on a real time basis. As a result, the average cycle time was reduced from 6-8 weeks to 3-8 days.
