Breaking down the information barriers between CAD and PLM
A world leading provider of airborne radar, navigation systems, electronic countermeasures, airspace management systems, space systems, and government systems.
The organization creates hundreds of new designs and increasingly relies on outsource manufacturing partners. Design bills of material (BOMs) were traditionally driven by their CAD tool, but this tool did not contain "real" part data or any supplier part data. For each new design, the BOM needed to be built "from scratch" in Teamcenter. Reconciling two versions of the BOM for each new design increased cycle time, failure rates and costs. Increased reliance on outsource providers heightened these issues.
Synapsis implemented the Synapsis product, EDA Gateway, which tightly integrated their EDA, or CAD, system with their PLM system, Teamcenter, which contains all the required part information. Synapsis trained the organization's staff in how to use the tool to achieve a consistent, cost effective approach to electronic BOM creation and management.
Critical part and supplier information was brought directly to the designers' desktop, from the PLM system. This has led to better design decisions and lower failure rates because part properties, symbols and footprints are now pulled from a single, centrally managed database. Development time is faster because useable BOMs are now created in the CAD tool at the front end of the design process. These BOMs can be used immediately, internally and among supply chain partners – from the earliest prototype stage.
Synapsis offers a FREE bi-monthly newsletter covering various issues of compliance and PLM.
