Motorola

Improving BOM management and integrating PLM and ERP.

Company Description

Motorola is a $37 billion communications company providing end-to-end seamless mobility products. Motorola's four operating business segments include Mobile Devices Segment; Government and Enterprise Mobility Solutions Segment; Networks Segment, and Connected Home Solutions Segment.

Business Challenge

Motorola was managing BOMs in their PLM system by revision and managing those same BOMs in their ERP system by "change effectivity" dates. As a result, the implementation of ECNs was not a controlled process. Decisions based on incorrect or missing data were resulting in excessive costs in scrap costs and redundant operations.

Synapsis Project

Synapsis developed a business process and implemented a system by which effectivity dates were brought into the PLM system. This established an integration between PLM and ERP that produced numerous benefits.

Impact

Motorola now drives BOM effectivity and schedule dates from PLM which are then fed into ERP. The company now has the ability to stage ECNs in order to reduce production, rework, and scrap costs. By integrating the way BOMs are revised in PLM and ERP, the handoff of ECNs from Engineering to Manufacturing was simplified and made faster.
